There are lots of different cat toys on the market and the price will vary from shop to shop. The only thing you need to know about cat toys is that not every cat will like the same toy.
Most cats will love toys that are very light and easy for them to pick up. They also like toys that they can hold and beat up with their back paws. Sometimes you can get away with giving a toy designed for a baby to a cat because these baby toys have passed safety tests that make them child friendly. So if it's been approved for babies, then they should be safe for cats too. Baby toys are good as they are usually light and cats can fight with them.
Here is a list of 5 cat toys that Cleo our cat loves. These toys along with her plush bunny toy are the key toys that she plays with on a day to day basis.
Toy 1 - Red bone
This toy bone is
actually a dog toy. It does make a squeaky noise when it is squeezed but Cleo
isn't that strong to activate it. She really enjoys holding this bone
between her front legs and beating it up with her back legs. She can’t pick it
up in her mouth, but she can hit it with her front paws.
Toy 2 - Blue ball with yellow stipes
This is similar in size to a pigbong ball. This ball was included in a cat set with ball number 5. She has played with this ball a lot and if you look at the image you can see the marks where her claws have really dug into it. You are able to roll this ball across a tiled floor and cats will love jumping out and pouncing on it as it rolls.
Toy 3 - Blue ball
This ball when
bounced on the ground activates a flashing red light. This ball is quite hard
and bouncy so you would need to be careful in the room that you allow your cat
to play with it in. It works better on a tiled floor or a wooden floor. I found
that Cleo loves the light part of it. It amazes her to see it bounce and then
light up. It’s quite heavy so a cat won’t be able to hit it with its paw. But
they can beat it up with their back legs.
Toy 4 - Gold ball
This is probably the
number one toy she loves. Again it came in a set of toys for cats and she has
two of these. She really loves them as they are the lightest of all the toys
mentioned in this post. They weigh nothing so she really can paw it, hit it and
fight with it. It has been 8 months and so far there are no tears on either
ball.
Toy 5 - Pink and green ball
These toys are great if you want to train your cat to play fetch. The way that the ball is designed means that the cat can pick it up at any angle with their mouth. I have seen a cat play fetch with this up to about 2 years old, but after that she lost interest in it. But if you have a cat that likes been challenged, then this is the ball for them.
Conclusion
It is worth nothing that you should always supervise your cat when they are playing with cat toys especially if they are plastic or have bells or rattles inside them. Cats are notorious for trying to rip a toy apart so it is better to be a bit cautious and be in the same room with them when they are playing with the toys.
