These cat scratching boxes are made of strong corrugated cardboard and they are actually quite hardy. Depending on how much your cat uses it, you could get up to six months from the box. They are usually one of the more affordable cat scratching accessories as they are basically made of strong cardboard.

The cardboard used in these boxes is corrugated cardboard and it is also big enough that your cat can lie on it if they wish. Depending on the version you purchase they can measure around 18 x 9.7 x 2 inches. Again different brands will have different sizes. Inside this cat boxes there is usually a toy or a ball with a bell inside it.

The box has two cut outs on each size and some on the top of the box as well. The aim of the box is for the cat to scratch it with their claws and to play with the toy or the ball inside the box through the holes in the side.

Advantages

  • It is one of the more affordable cat scratching accessories on the market.
  • It can usually be purchased at any pet store.
  • There is no assembling required with this cat scratching box. All you have to do is remove the clear plastic wrapper around it and give it to your cat.
  • There is usually a small bag of catnip included with the box and it is sellotaped to the box. You can spread this in between the corrugated cardboard. (optional)
  • Since these cat scratching boxes are so affordable you can buy a few when they are on offer and place one in each room where your cat hangs out to encourage them to scratch this and not your furniture.
  • It's a great way to distract your cat and get the cat to scratch their claws on this box instead of on your furniture.
  • When your cat has scratched one side of the corrugated cardboard as much as it possibly can, you can simply reverse the cardboard over and they can start scratching on this new side.
  • The ball or toy inside the scratching box can be removed if it begins to annoy you

Disadvantages

  • If you have a cat that loves sitting on this box, eventually the centre of the box can collapse in the middle and it will lose its shape.
  • When the cardboard breaks or wears down on both sides of the cat scratching box, you will need to buy a new box as you cannot buy a replacement piece of cardboard for the inside of the box.
  • If you have a cat that sheds a lot of hair, then their hair can gather inside the box. This will mean that you would need to check the inside of the box once a week and clean it out.
  • When your cat scratches at this box they will pull out tiny pieces of cardboard residue that will fall inside the box and sometimes on the floor around it.
  • If you have more than one cat using this cat scratching box, then it won’t last 6 months.
  • Some versions of these scratching boxes will not be as tough as another version. So always check out the reviews on these before you buy one.
  • These cardboard scratching boxes are not invincible and they are not meant to last forever, so they will require replacing after a few months.
  • It can be quite loud and annoying if your cat is trying to get to the toy or the plastic ball with the bell inside the box through the side gaps.
