Small Cat or Kitten Sisal Covered Scratching Post

This is a free standing cat scratching post set on a square base. There is sisal rope wrapped around the post of this scratching post. The base of this measures about 15.5 x 15.5 inches with the post standing at a height of 24 inches. It’s suitable for kittens and average sized cats. If you don’t have a lot of spare space in your home then this scratching post would be an ideal size.

The base usually comes in one color which is most often grey but sometimes you can get other colors. The scratching post comes with an allen key and the post screws into the base and it is tightened with the allen key. Depending on how often your cat used this it can last from one to three years. If you get one of these, you need to place it in the room that your cat spends the most time in.

Advantages

  • It is very easy to construct as you only have to screw the post into the base and tighten it with an allen key which is included.
  • Once your cat gets used to using this scratching post, they should lose interest in destroying your furniture.
  • Since it is made from plywood, the whole structure is quite hardy.
  • The posts are quite small and compact so you can get one for each of the rooms that your cat hangs out in.
  • You can assemble the scratching post together in about five minutes.
  • If the sisal rope comes loose, you can glue it back on, but be careful with the type of glue that you use.
  • If you have just gotten a kitten then these types of scratching posts are usually on the cheaper side and would work for the first year until your kitten got bigger.
  • Since the post is 24 inches high, there is plenty of length in the post for your cat to grip the post and use it to give themselves a bull body stretch.
  • The base is wide enough for a cat to sit on it.

Disadvantages

  • Overtime with excessive use, the cat can eventually fray the rope and it can become loose.
  • If you have a big cat that is quite strong, you might need to put a brick or a heavy ornament on the base to stop them from knocking it over when they are using the scratching post to sharpen their claws.
  • If any part of this scratching post breaks, you cannot buy any replacements for it. You would need to purchase a new scratching post.
  • These scratching posts are made from plywood, so if it was dropped or fell down the stairs, then it will break apart.
  • Some cats might not like it, and if that is the case, you might have to bribe them with treats to start using it.
  • The inside of these cat scratching posts are hollow. They are not made from a solid piece of plywood so that it why they can break.
  • These types of scratching posts are only meant for cats and not for dogs as they could destroy it.
